Step 3. What type of video input does your TV have?

Look at the back or sides of your HD TV to see what video inputs are available. HD TVs typically have HDMI, VGA (sometimes called RGB), composite video and component video inputs.

Below are pictures of these four video inputs. Select the one you have or want to use.

HDMI - High-Definition Multimedia Interface. For the technical details follow this link to Wikipedia. Every HD TV will have at least one HDMI input, usually several. It will give you the highest quality video and it carries audio on the same cable. |

VGA. Video Graphics Array. Read all about it here. Sometimes it is labeled as a RGB input. Most HD TVs will have one of these.
VGA carries video only so this is a bad choice if you want to watch movies or use apps that generate sound. You will still hear the sound coming from your iPhone but it won't play through your TV. |

Composite Video Input. Separate video and audio plugs. For the technical details follow this link to Wikipedia.
Composite video has a seperate yellow RCA plug for video and one or two audio RCA plugs, white and red.
Composite video input is an easy way to connect an iPhone to a HD TV but the image and audio will be a lower quality than HDMI.

Component video input will have three video RCA plugs, gree, blue and red. The audio uses two RCA plugs, white and red.
Most HD TVs will have component video inputs.
Component video input will not look or sound as good as HDMI and you need to plug in 5 connectors rather than one.
